How to keep your details secure online

Credit Union SA are committed to keeping you and your money safe while you transact with us.

While we do our utmost at Credit Union SA to ensure the security and confidentiality of our Members’ information, there are also many steps that you can and should take to protect yourself.

Using any kind of financial service, such as a cheque book, credit card, telephone or Internet banking, requires due care against fraud. In some circumstances, contributory negligence could actually lead to personal liability for fraudulent acts perpetrated on your accounts.

The following information is provided as a guide to assist you in protecting the information on your computer. It is not an exhaustive list and is intended for information purposes only.

Things you should do

  • Keep your computer access IDs and passwords confidential and secure.

  • Choose your passwords carefully, using a combination of characters, numbers and symbols.

  • Change your passwords regularly.

  • Be alert when using a computer or smart device for banking and other transactions in public areas.

  • Install reputable virus and anti-spyware software and ensure it’s updated regularly.

  • Install a personal Internet firewall to provide extra protection for your computer and visit staysmartonline.gov.au for more information.

  • Always log in to Credit Union SA Internet Banking via the Credit Union SA public website, after manually entering www.creditunionsa.com.au (URL) in the address bar. Alternatively, you can access the website by saving the address in your 'Favourites’ folder.

  • When using your Visa card to pay for online purchases, always make sure you’re buying from a secure site. Look for a padlock icon or other indicator that the website you are viewing is secure.

  • Whenever you finish an Internet Banking session be sure to click ‘Logout’ to exit, then close your internet browser.

  • Turn off your computer when it’s not in use.

  • Check the 'Last Logged In' information in each Internet Banking session and promptly report any irregularities to us.

  • Report suspected security breaches immediately. If you think another person may have ascertained your password, change it straight away and advise us by calling 08 8202 7777.

  • Check your statements for any transactions that look suspicious.

  • Cancel any card that has been used fraudulently.

Things you shouldn’t do

  • Never access banking sites from a link in an email. For more information on fake e-mails, visit the staysmartonline.gov.au website.

  • Never access internet banking from a public computer, such as an internet cafe.

  • Never, in response to any email, provide your personal or security details, including your Access Code, membership ID or Internet Banking password.

  • Do not open, run, install or use programs or files obtained from a person or organisation you do not know or who is not a reputable vendor.

  • Do not open email attachments from unknown sources. Email is one of the prime movers for malicious viruses. Delete any emails you think are suspicious. Delete the email from your 'Inbox', and delete it again from your 'Deleted' folder, or 'Sent' folder if you have forwarded on the email.

  • Never open an executable (.exe file) retrieved or received online, unless you are expecting it from a trusted source.

  • Do not leave your computer screen or smart device screen idle for long periods, or leave it unattended without locking your screen.
