Winter can be the toughest period for people experiencing homelessness. From trying to find shelter to securing a warm set of clothes, wintertime can bring significant hardship for those doing it rough.

Wanting to provide support during this difficult period, Credit Union SA and clothing brand Rough Sleeper have teamed up to provide warm clothing for those who need it most.

As part of this initiative, Credit Union SA provided 180 puffer jackets to its staff, helping them stay warm throughout winter while also giving back. For every jacket provided, another was donated, resulting in 180 additional puffer jackets for Hutt St Centre.

“At Credit Union SA, we’re always looking for ways to bring our purpose to life by helping South Australians thrive,” stated Mrs Karen Beard, Chief Transformation Officer at Credit Union SA. “When we decided to purchase corporate jackets for our team to keep them warm this winter, we discovered an inspiring local initiative that aligned with our values perfectly. Through Rough Sleeper Australia's partnership with Hutt Street Centre, every jacket Credit Union SA purchased resulted in another being donated to someone experiencing hardship this winter. This meant not only keeping our team warm but also helping provide warmth and dignity to another 180 South Australians who need it most.”

Mrs Beard continues, “I'm proud that our decision brought together three South Australian organisations who have a shared commitment to community. It's a reminder that even everyday business decisions can create positive outcomes for others. For our team, these jackets are more than a uniform item, they're a tangible connection to the community we're here to serve.”

Mr Chris Burns, CEO of Hutt St Centre shared, “These jackets will go directly to our clients, offering warmth, comfort, and a sense of care during the colder months, ensuring more people in our community have what they need to face winter with dignity.”

“Behind every person experiencing homelessness is a story, and for many, their circumstances are the result of challenges far beyond their control”, stated Mr Nic Yeomans, Founder of Rough Sleeper Australia. “With the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, more Australians are finding themselves in incredibly vulnerable situations. Our partnership with Credit Union SA demonstrates how business can be a force for good, delivering practical support when it's needed most. We're proud to work alongside the incredible team at Hutt St Centre, whose expertise ensures every jacket reaches someone who truly needs it."

This generous contribution will provide immediate, practical support for people experiencing homelessness. As the weather turns colder, having access to something as simple as a warm jacket can make a real difference, helping our clients feel more comfortable, cared for and supported during a challenging time.

With durable, good-quality jackets that can last throughout the season, our clients are better equipped to stay warm throughout the winter months, giving them one less thing to worry about day-to-day.

Mr Burns concluded “Thanks to this outstanding initiative from Credit Union SA and Rough Sleeper, many of our clients can keep warm during this rough winter period. Partnerships like this help us continue to support people experiencing homelessness with the practical items they need, while also reminding our clients that they are seen, valued and cared for.”
