Confirmation of Payee (CoP) is an industry‑wide service and initiative of Australian Payments Plus (AP+) to help protect people and businesses from fraud, scams and mistaken payments, supporting them to keep their money safe.
CoP checks account details, giving you greater confidence that your money is going where you intend it to. Before you hit ‘Continue’, we’ll show a simple match outcome so you can decide whether to proceed, double‑check, or stop the payment.
When you enter an account name, BSB and account number, the details are checked against records held by the recipient’s bank, and you’ll see one of these match outcomes:
Possible outcomes:
These on‑screen results are designed to help you catch errors and potential scams, based on the account details you entered before the payment is made.
- Match – The account details match the bank records of the intended recipient.
Note: A Match result does not guarantee the payment purpose is legitimate, always verify unexpected or changed payment details via a trusted number or channel. - Close match – The account details closely match the bank records of the intended recipient (e.g., name is similar, but not exact (“Sandy” vs “Mandy”)). Double‑check the exact legal or account name with the payee (initials, middle names, trading vs legal names can differ).
- No match – The account details do not match the bank records of the intended recipient. Stop and verify. Contact the payee on a trusted number or channel. If you suspect a scam, do not pay.
- Error – The service couldn’t confirm the account details at the time. Contact the intended recipient to confirm the account details.
- Account Not Found – The service could not find the account. Please check the BSB and account number are correctly entered.
- Inactive Account – The account details provided belong to an account that is no longer active. Contact the intended recipient to confirm the account details.
Why it matters
The CoP service is part of the Australian banking sector’s Scam‑Safe initiatives and is designed to add an additional layer of protection to help give you piece of mind.
- CoP helps stop payment‑redirection scams (like fake invoices) by alerting you if the account details don’t match.
- CoP reduces mistakes when setting up new payees.
- CoP gives confidence that your money is going where you intend it to go.
Privacy and security
All CoP information is passed securely between financial institutions to ensure your data remains safe. The account name, BSB and account number you’ve entered is matched with the account details held by the recipient’s bank, and an outcome is displayed.
In case of ‘No Match’ results, the recipient’s name will not be displayed, unless it is a business or government organisation, thus helping protect everyone’s privacy while improving safety.
Extra scam‑safe tips
You should independently verify any request to change bank details. You should not share one‑time passcodes or Secure SMS codes with anyone who
contacts you. Credit Union SA will never ask for these codes over the phone. If in doubt, hang up and call us on a verified number.
