Security for Internet Banking
The use of the Internet has become much more prevalent over recent years and an ever growing number of people are using the Internet more often, to pay bills, arrange travel, purchase goods and services, or manage finances.
From time to time, attackers on the Internet discover new security holes in the software that you use when you are connected to the Internet. Whenever your computer is online it is potentially vulnerable to malicious Internet users.
All computer users should be aware of the vital importance of security when transacting online.
General Security Guidelines
- Credit Union SA use several layers of strong security methods including cryptography, firewalls and time log outs amongst others to ensure your personal and financial information is kept safe, secure and private.
- Cryptography is the art or science of keeping messages secret. It deals with all aspects of secure messaging, authentication, digital signatures, electronic money, and other applications.
- Encryption is a key component of cryptography. We use powerful 128-bit encryption technologies - the locks and keys of the information age - to protect sensitive information on digital communications networks. Encryption technologies work by scrambling and encoding information so that it can only be read by the proper recipient.
- To take advantage of strong encryption technology, you must have a browser that supports 128-bit encryption. Latest release browsers have this functionality. If you are not sure whether your browser is suitable, we urge you to contact your technical support person or Internet Service Provider.
- We ensure connection security through a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol. SSL provides privacy and reliability between two communicating applications. It allows our server (us) and client (you) to authenticate each other and to negotiate an encryption algorithm and cryptographic keys. This happens before the application protocol transmits or receives its first byte of data. Encryption is used after an initial 'handshake' to define a secret key.
- Your personal information is protected from the Internet by firewalls and secure servers. When browsing a secure website, both Netscape and Internet Explorer display a locked padlock in the lower status bar of the window. If you are visiting a non-secure site, Netscape will display an unlocked padlock in the lower status bar of the window. The padlock is not visible in Internet Explorer when the session is not secure.
- Only valid user messages are allowed to pass through the firewall and access the credit union system via the secure servers. Member activities allowed via the Internet are strictly defined and controlled by the secure servers in place.
- Access to internet banking is password protected. No one can use your internet banking access without knowing your user id and associated password.
- If you are concerned that another person has ascertained your password, you should immediately change it and advise us of your concerns by calling 08 8202 7634.
- We do not store your personal and financial information on our web server. It is kept on separate computers that have no direct public access. After you log out of an Internet Banking Session, your personal data is no longer available on the webserver.
- A temporary cookie (special file) is stored on your computer during your online session. In the logout process, the cookie is removed from your computer offering additional protection against unauthorized access to your confidential financial records.
- When you logout from internet banking, we automatically clear any Credit Union SA web pages from your browser's memory (cache clearing). This prevents anyone else from viewing web pages that were displayed during your internet banking session.
- We give you a confirmation receipt number for each financial transaction that you do. We also keep a history log of the transactions you do during internet banking sessions. As an additional measure of security, you can also monitor the date and time that you last logged on to our Internet Banking Service.
