At Credit Union SA we understand the importance of protecting each individual's right to privacy, particularly that of our members, and we are committed to complying with the Privacy Act 1988, the National Privacy Principles and the Mutual Banking Code of Practice. This notice contains some important information about how we deal with personal information. More detailed information is in our Privacy Policy.

• What personal information do we collect and how do we collect it?

  • We collect information that is necessary to identify and contact you when you apply for membership, apply for any of our products or services, or are nominated to be a signatory on an account or as a guarantor. If you apply for credit or insurance products we may collect information in relation to your employment, financial position and credit status, and in relation to some insurance products we may collect information about your health. We do not collect information about your political or religious beliefs, ethnic background or sexual preferences.

    Whenever practicable we collect the personal information we need directly from you, but sometimes someone else may give us information about you (eg an applicant for a loan who nominates you as a guarantor) and sometimes we may get it from publicly available sources such as the electoral roll, court judgement listings or telephone white pages. We do this to confirm details about you - some of which you may have already supplied. In some instances we may seek your consent for us to obtain information from someone else for a specific purpose (eg a credit report).

    We collect statistical information in relation to the use of our website. Cookies are used to track visits to our site so that we can better identify our site users and the types of functions they utilise on the site.

• For what purposes do we collect personal information?

  • We collect information so we can process your application for membership, assess and process any application you make for our products and services, supply and administer those products and services, comply with our legal obligations in relation to the identification of account holders and signatories and the provision of information to members, and to help us plan and develop our products and services for the benefit of all our members.

    We also collect it so that we can give you information about products and services available from us and other organisations that we think may be of interest to you, unless you do not consent to that (see below).

    By collecting information about the numbers of visits to our website, types of transactions conducted and documents downloaded, we can work to improve the delivery of services through the internet, both at an individual level, and more generally to our members (and other visitors).

• What if your personal information is not provided?

  • If you do not provide us with all of the information we request we may be unable to accept your application for membership or to supply to you the product or service that you require.

• When do we give personal information to other organisations?

  • Sometimes we may need to give some personal information about you to other organisations which assist us in providing or in administering the products and services you require, or assist us in giving you the information that you are entitled to as a member. Examples of such organisations are our data processing bureau, Cuscal Ltd and its subsidiaries, printing and mailing houses, insurers, valuers, legal advisors, collection agents and conveyancers. These organisations may only use the information to the extent necessary to provide the services we require. We only use suppliers who have a commitment to security and confidentiality.

    Sometimes we may be required to give some personal information about you to other organisations to comply with our legal obligations. Examples of such organisations are our auditors, our legal advisors, APRA, Austrac and the Australian Taxation Office.

• How do we keep your personal information secure?

  • We take all reasonable steps to protect the personal information we hold from misuse, loss, or unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. Electronically stored information is protected by encryption technology and the use of secure passwords, so that only members or authorised Credit Union SA staff (and certain employees of our data processing supplier) can access personal information in this manner. Access by Credit Union SA and our data processing supplier's staff is necessary to carry out members' instructions in relation to their accounts, but excludes access via the internet or telephone (interactive voice response). We may also review members' accounts from time to time for audit and other data checking purposes.

    Physical security is maintained over our offices and computer installations, and external archive storage locations. The destruction of records is also conducted under secure and controlled conditions.

    We endeavour to keep all personal information that we hold current and accurate. To do this we rely on members providing us with accurate information, and encourage members to notify us promptly if any of their personal details change. Without accurate information we may not be able to provide services to a member at an optimal level.

• Your access rights, and how to contact us

  • The Privacy Act gives you rights to access the personal information we hold about you, and you can ask us to correct the information if it is inaccurate. We will respond as quickly as practicable to a request for access, and whilst there is no fee that applies automatically, depending on the nature of information sought, and the time taken to retrieve it, we may seek to recover our costs (details of our charges are available on request). There is no charge for correcting personal information. More information is set out in our Privacy Policy.

• Do you wish to receive the Credit Union SA Member Newsletter and other information about products and services?

  • We may, with your consent, use your personal information, such as your contact details, to give you information about products and services available from us and other organizations that we think may be of interest to you. This may be in our regular Member Newsletter (which also contains other information about Credit Union SA that is likely to be of interest to members, such as current interest rates for loans, savings and investments, special product offers and general information about your credit union and the services it offers) or it may be separate marketing material. When we provide you with information about the products and services of another organisation, we control the dissemination of that information to you, and do not provide your personal information to that organisation. We do not sell or trade personal information about our members.

    If you do not wish to receive our Member Newsletter, or other marketing material, please notify us in writing, that you

    a)	do not wish to receive the Credit Union SA Newsletter and/or
    b)	do not wish to receive other marketing material from Credit Union SA.

    You will need to include your member number, name and address, signature and date.
